Overview

San Diego State University is seeking applicants with demonstrated experience and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of historically underrepresented groups.

Position Information

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before one year from the date of hire with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The incumbent is responsible for the initial review and editing of catalog copy, and for production of the printed and electronic copies of the general catalog, graduate bulletin, and IVC bulletin. He or she will facilitate project workflow in close collaboration with graphic designer and administrative analyst, ensuring adherence to university guidelines. The incumbent will interact with department chairs and deans, making recommendations regarding appropriate wording and format for inclusion in the catalog/bulletin, and ensure timely submissions of said information. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and writing an on-line curriculum guide used by faculty and colleges, providing instructions regarding curriculum processes and criteria that is required by Curriculum Services. This position will be responsible for coordinating the curriculum guide information and incorporating it into CurricUNET (electronic curriculum management software).

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,691 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515 – $5,704 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Incumbents at this level serve a more strategic role in developing communication, marketing and public affairs plans to support long-term objectives and to increase the visibility of the university. Incumbents may be responsible for coordinating the daily operation of public affairs, alumni affairs or related program. Incumbents have the highest level of contact with university management and the media and respond to immediate requests when the department head is not available. The work requires a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of marketing and communications theory and media vehicles.

Entry to the second level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

Must be able to think critically. Use sound logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of approaches to problems.

Detail oriented.

Must coordinate the activities and work flow of others.

Ability to communicate well in writing and orally, to include developing strategic communications.

Ability to understand complex university policies and ensure that they are clearly communicated.

Be able to manage time well in order to meet critical deadlines.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Minimum of three years of work experience using InDesign or other design software package.

Master’s degree in communication, English, journalism, rhetoric and writing studies, or related field. Five years of specific work experience as an editor will substitute for the master’s degree.

Five years of experience proofreading, editing, and writing copy at a college or university.

Four years of experience using InDesign or another design software.
