Technical Specialist (Revenue Agent 3, In-Training)

This opportunity is open to Department of Revenue employees only. The Revenue Agent 3 Technical Specialist is the designated technical expert and training resource for lower level revenue agents. The position also conducts on-going technical training for more experienced agents.

As a technical specialist you’ll train and share your expertise and best practices in resolving complex cases with lower level revenue agents within the unit. Areas of specialization include:

Rules and Laws

Trust fund accountability

Successor liability

Financial analysis

Duties include independently working and resolving very complex, time consuming, possibly sensitive taxpayer delinquent accounts that require in-depth investigation using advanced professional techniques. Cases typically involve high dollar liabilities. You will be a resource for the customer service desk staff by providing guidance and support. You will also review recently issued audit assessments for collectability and serve as liaison with auditors to search for potential assets that will assist with future collections.

Minimum Qualifications

Revenue Agent 3

Two (2) years of experience working as a Revenue Agent with at least one year of those years at the journey level (Revenue Agent 2) within the Department of Revenue.

  • Don’t quite meet the Revenue Agent 3 qualifications? No problem. The Compliance Division is willing to consider an In-Training plan from the Revenue Agent 2 level.

Revenue Agent 2

Two years of experience as a Revenue Agent within the Washington State Department of Revenue;

OR

Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, accounting, communications, finance, economics, criminal justice, law, social sciences, or communications, and one year of professional experience in tax administration, collection of civil debts, law enforcement, or investigations involving personal background, business practices or fraud.

For both job classes, the successful candidate must:
Be a proven performer in mainstream compliance

Demonstrate clear communication skills to provide technical training and guidance to new and journey level agents

Possess knowledge and experience working complex accounts involving successorship accountability, trust fund liability and financial analysis

Have the ability to provide guidance and training on how to conduct financial analysis of business financial statements and understanding audit assessments.

The successful candidate must possess the ability and willingness to lead a team, including but not limited to:

Coaching and mentoring a team

Determining resolutions to challenges and issues

Promoting trust among managers, colleagues and team members

Supporting division and agency mission, values and vision
