Optical Engineer

The Azure Optical Networking Team is growing, and we’re looking for a creative and hard-working software developer to help build the world’s best SDN platform.

All Microsoft cloud services run over the Azure Optical Network. With more-than 50,000 miles of owned optical fiber carrying Petabits of capacity, it’s one of the largest optical networks on the planet. To accommodate tremendous growth with perfect service availability, we’re investing in physical layer automation controlled by software-defined management and operations.

Responsibilities

Working closely with partner teams in Azure Networking, you’ll be a critical part of developing the large-scale that drive our network, such as zero-touch provisioning, auto-remediation of failures (e.g. fiber cuts, undersea cable failures, hardware failures), topology validation, and hardware data models with streaming telemetry. You will get the rare opportunity to see your code in action from the front lines by supporting the Optical Network in the dev/ops model.


Qualifications

Skills & Qualifications
  • Self-starter with proven ability implement creative solutions in code
  • Experience with C#, Python, REST, Syslog, XML, JSON, YAML, and Workflows
  • Ability to learn new languages, frameworks, and APIs
  • Knowledge of DWDM networking fundamentals or strong desire to learn more about optical networking
  • Excellent communication skills and a history of impact through collaboration.
  • Experience with large distributed systems or machine learning/AI

Experience Required
  • 1 year of professional software/optical development experience
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering (or a related field), or equivalent alternative education, skills, and/or practical experience is required.


Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
