Materials Scientist

G ENE R A L PURP O S E O F J O B :
The Materials Scientist will understand and implement the technical aspects of laminate material and testing involved in the certification process through Underwriters Laboratory (UL) for new or revised products developed by Isola. This position will work closely with the UL engineer, R&D Director, and the Analytical Lab Manager, to dete r m i ne p r i o ri t y of ta s k s based on the project plan. They will prepare and submit material based on sample requirements and deep knowledge of the impact of the UL testing methods and how this effects the results based on construction and temperature choices. The UL Material Scientist will manage the material selection side with the UL Engineer, Corporate Engineering, and R&D, to assistant and consult as needed.

ESSE N T I A L F U NC T IO N S A N D RESP O NS I B I L I T I ES :

Coordinates with UL Engineer to ensure that Isola products are compliant with UL standards. Understands ALL UL test methods. Understands ALL test methods in the Analytical Lab. Verify all follow-up services (FUS) comply with UL by pretesting samples before being sent to UL. Serve as UL Subject Matter Expert (SME), including understanding all applicable standards for UL. Develop and maintain strong relationships between Isola and UL to foster a business alliance. Ensure that all ECN and process changes made to materials, including but not limited to raw material process changes are compliant with UL standards. Responds to inquiries from internal colleagues related to general UL information. Responsible for obtaining a UL certification on all new material developed by Isola . Determines the proper constructions of laminate to provide UL for testing programs. Periodically visits UL to better understand the test methods and get to know the people involved. Discuss possible projects with the UL Engineer before submitting to UL. Submit requests for a project to be started to UL Engineer Determines the amount of material needed for samples required for UL testing and submit orders for material to R&D. Verifies that the material meets the UL sample requirements and are cut to sample size required by the UL project requirements. Ensures samples are labeled and packaged properly and sent to UL per project documentation. Understand and develop laboratory testing including but not limited to: FTIR Flammability testing (flame retardant performance testing) SEM/EDX GPC HPLC GC/MS TGA TMA DMA DSC Will be “dotted line” reporting to the Analytical Lab manager. EDU C A T IO N A ND /O R EXPER I ENCE :
BS or MS in Chemistry or Physics. Deep understanding of the following properties and how they are determined: TGA, FTIR, Flammability, Dielectric Strength, Flexural and Tensile Strength. A basic understanding of prepregs and laminates. Intermediate understanding of Organic Chemistry. Ability to work off shifts occasionally in order to complete testing requirements and meet applicable deadlines.
