Learning Consultant/Instructional Designer

Job Responsibilities
The Learning Consultant is responsible for delivering on the Learning and Development Strategy; to develop and increase the capabilities of all PetSmart associates to deliver business results. This position will:

  • Partner with business units to determine needs as they relate to learning (both current and future state)
  • Develop learning solutions that take into consideration different areas of our business (Stores, Distribution Centers, Home Office)
  • Create solutions that are adopted and drive measurable impact to the business
  • Develop, design and deliver (where applicable) content that strengthens capabilities for both technical and soft-skill focus
  • Proactively identify opportunities for learning based on business relationships and company strategic direction and need

This role focuses on improving associate and business performance by partnering with business leaders and other support partners to conduct needs assessment and root cause analyses to determine appropriate learning solutions. This position is responsible for consulting, program implementation and the design and development of learning solutions. In addition, this role will manage multiple priorities and projects that may overlap with each other. The successful candidate will build close, collaborative partnerships with various partners (internal and external consultants) and will measure the business impact of the solutions to determine best practices and effective use of resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consult, build and maintain collaborative partnerships with business and HR business leaders to identify business needs and relevant solutions that increase effectiveness
  • Develop a working knowledge of all aspects of the business and draws on the professional expertise of subject matter experts for content development
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities with overlapping timelines and project deadlines across multiple businesses (Stores, Distribution Centers, Home Office)
  • Flex and adapt to change (i.e., introduction of new programs, learning avenues and technology)
  • Develop tools and materials (i.e., handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, computer based software, knowledge validation tests) with an agile/flexible mindset. Ensure most effective method is utilized for knowledge delivery
  • Facilitate delivery of leadership programs, courses, workshops, onboarding events and activities (as needed). Virtual and in-person
  • Ensure content quality, accuracy, relevance and timeliness for all content we create/collect
  • Selects and manages evaluation strategies to evaluate program effectiveness and impact, and uses analytics and trends to modify or improve programs
  • Updates and modifies existing course materials based on best practices, policy/product/procedure updates, or for continuous improvement purposes
  • Responds in a timely manner to management with solutions to problems and requests
  • Creates implementations plans for programs, ensuring high-quality participant experience, ongoing program sustainability and cost-effective use of resources
  • Maintains an understanding of the key business objectives, metrics and strategic plans of the organization
  • Foster collaboration by contributing to the work of their peers by sharing resources, feedback, best practices and innovations

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree in Instructional Design, Human Resource Development, Adult Learning, Organizational Development, Business or related field strongly preferred
  • 5-7 years related experience within either a learning and development, human resources or organizational development function
  • Strong oral communication and creative, persuasive, and technical writing skills
  • Ability to establish high level of credibility quickly; appropriate confidence to gain the trust and respect of business leaders, key stakeholders and learners
  • Ability to gain an in-depth understanding and analyze key business drivers, strategy goals, and challenges to effectively support the organization
  • Field retail, corporate retail and/or distribution experience preferred
  • Strong computer literacy and technical expertise with graphic design and elearning authoring software. Must have experience with Microsoft Office and eLearning creation
  • Knowledge and experience developing elearning courses, creative concepts, scripts and storyboards
  • Strong presence, poise, persuasiveness
  • Anticipate and adapt to the changing needs of the business
  • Must possess a passion for learning and continuous improvement; must stay current with learning principles, trends and technologies
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
