Software Developer (Part-Time)

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University is revolutionizing the clinical research enterprise with the help of information technology. Within the area of Precision Medicine, we are building systems that implement harnessing genetic sequences to detect health conditions and save lives. We have an immediate opening for a talented and self-motivated software developer who has strength in collaborative work. The individual will be part of a team that will work on achieving Columbia’s role in the All of Us Research Program (https://www.nih.gov/precision-medicine-initiative-cohort-program), where we are trying to push precision medicine at the national level. The candidate will be responsible for data processing, data exchange/transfer/load (ETL), data visualization, data mining, instrumentation, DevOps, user interface design and software architecture. The candidate will also design and implement back-end systems that help integrate clinical data amongst several institutions providing data using standard vocabulary. The ideal candidate will have professional experience in a number of programming language and database environments. Experience in clinical medicine, clinical vocabulary, statistical data mining or NLP is not necessary, but preferred. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of open source solutions together with a community of international researchers.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biomedical informatics, information science, plus four years of related experience.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Great communication skills; Experience with one or more compiled programming languages (e.g. Java, Scala, C#, C++, etc.) and one or more interpreted programming languages (Python, Perl, bash etc.); Working knowledge of SQL; Experience with big data, NoSQL databases, and health care data a plus.

Essential Functions

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Software and system design, implementation, and testing (75%)

2. Application deployment and configuration (10%)

3. Communicate with technical individuals at various grant sites (10%)

4. Software requirements specification (5%)

Additional Essential Functions (Limit to 3950 characters.)

The incumbent will work under the direction of the faculty member leading the project. He/she will work closely with the project’s team including the project manager, current software developers and sponsoring project personnel.

The incumbent must be organized and adhere to project deadlines.
