Parks Services Supervisor

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to supervise the day-to-day maintenance tasks and staff at City parks and recreational facilities

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Inspects assigned grounds, fences, buildings, recreation centers and community centers: reviews current and future projects and deadlines for completions with supervisor; compiles project lists for cost analysis and materials.

Maintains inventory of equipment, parts and supplies: ensures adequate supplies available to complete work assignments; initiates orders materials and equipment; ensures maintenance of all equipment; prepares and submits purchase orders.

Makes recommendations regarding department budget: monitors expenditures against approved budget; maintains related documentation.

Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Supervises the performance of a variety of landscaping duties, such as mowing grass, planting flowers and shrubs, weed eating around signs and fence lines, edging curb lines, clearing leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas, spreading and hauling ground cover, dirt, or mulch, applying herbicides and pesticides, pruning trees and shrubs, weeding flower beds, aerating and spreading grass seed, servicing irrigation systems, grooming ball fields, removing snow and ice, etc.

Supervises maintenance and construction tasks for various parks and facilities, such as resurfacing and renovating playgrounds, fields and courts, painting buildings, equipment, and parking lots, repairing and assembling fences, and performing light plumbing, electrical, masonry and carpentry repairs, etc.

Supervises the performance of general custodial duties at various parks and facilities, such as cleaning parks, ball fields, restrooms, kitchens and other areas, vacuuming carpets, scrubbing and waxing floors, dusting, washing windows, emptying trash, etc.

Operates a City vehicle; conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and , cleanliness of vehicle, etc.: loads and unloads materials, supplies and equipment as needed to complete assigned projects; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.

Supervises the performance of general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, such as inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including time sheets, invoices, supplies lists, and inspection reports; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including daily work reports, safety reports, project schedules and employee performance appraisals; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy .

Operates or uses various equipment and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and a motor vehicle and other equipment; operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Communicates with supervisor, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED; vocational or technical training in Electrical, HVAC or other trade; Three years of experience in parks and grounds maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.


Specific License or Certification Required:
Must possess and maintain the following certifications: CPR, First Aid, or other certifications as deemed necessary. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).


Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all city or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
