HIM Coding Educator – Health Information Management

Under the general guidance of the Coding Manager or HIM Director, this position will assist in developing, implementing and delivering training and education to providers, coders, CDI and other appropriate clinical staff.
This position is responsible for assisting with providing ongoing coding training of ICD-10-CM, PCS and/or CPT & E&M coding guidelines. Additionally, this position promotes consistency and accuracy of coding and documentation practices and conducts independent reviews that verify the correct assignment.
Mentors and educates coders and provides ongoing feedback to coders and CDI; creates and maintains all department training materials, tools and/or records; provides coding training and education to new and existing coders, residents and other supporting staff members; provides continued education of annual regulatory updates and changes; coordinates, schedules and performs coding and documentation reviews of patient records to ensure coders and providers are compliant with applicable rules and regulations; performs coding assessments to ensure accurate abstracting of clinical data to meet regulatory and compliance requirements.

Qualifications:

Requires an Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and progressively responsible experience that will result in the required specialized knowledge and abilities to perform the assigned work.
Must have minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible
acute care inpatient hospital and/or Outpatient, ED, Observation and Ancillary coding
experience that demonstrates a strong understanding of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Auditing skills and/or extensive knowledge in outpatient and professional fee E&M coding is preferred.
Must have certification as either a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS); Certified Coding Specialist Professional (CCS-P); Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or COC (Certified Outpatient Coder).
Must have an expert understanding of computer applications.
Must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, surgical terminology, pharmacological terminology, patient care documentation terminology, ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS and E&M pro fee. Must have the analytical ability necessary to interpret data contained in records and to assign appropriate codes.
Requires expert knowledge of automated encoder system. Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent customer service skills. Requires the ability to read, write and speak effectively in English.
