Communications and Outreach Coordinator

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week)

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for increasing constituents’ awareness of The Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’s role, services and programs throughout the State of Idaho.

Strategies may include developing collaborations with community organizations, staffing exhibit tables at expos, providing training sessions, developing and disseminating information and resources, and managing external and internal communications.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Idaho Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Gathers, organizes, and formats information related to the agency’s goals, objectives and services
  • Promotes the agency’s image consistent with the overall direction of the agency
  • Coordinates timely and accurate responses and information to citizens, community groups or governmental agencies
  • Encourages the use of resources provided by The Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Coordinates and conducts public meetings, media events or educational programs
  • Ensures a mutual sharing of information with other agencies, media and the general public
  • Delivers presentations, stand up training, or instruction to clients or the general public
  • Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.
  • Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials
  • Designs and/or prepares training/instructional materials, teaching aids and devices
  • Serves on various boards, councils, committees, or task forces to coordinate agency activities and facilitate agency goals and initiatives
  • Coordinate community involvement concerning issues specific to deaf or hard of hearing
  • Create and disseminate periodical publications
  • Coordinate information sharing through the use of social media
  • Maintains collaborations and partnerships with various community and government organizations
  • Educates entities on legal obligations on accessibility and accommodations as defined in Federal and State laws and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Deaf Studies or other related field from an accredited institution
  • Be able to communicate in American Sign Language
  • Have a knowledge of technical equipment available for those with hearing loss
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; with at least 2 years previous formal public speaking and presentation experience required
  • Basic knowledge of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and other Federal/ State laws protecting deaf/hard of hearing populations
  • Strong organization skills; cooperative team skills, multi-task oriented; self-motivated; ability to work independently and with minimum direction and oversight; strong work ethic
  • This position requires frequent in-state travel

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Communication, Deaf Studies or other related field
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; with at least 5 years previous formal public speaking and presentation experience required
  • Advanced knowledge of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and other Federal/State laws protecting deaf/hard or hearing population
